What is your experience with the Paleo Diet?
I’m nearing two month into a Paleolithic Diet aka Caveman diet. It has worked wonders for me (more energy, loss of unwanted weight, overall feeling good) but as of late it hasnt been as strict as when I started. Reasons for this: back at college, cost of healthy foods, recipes starting to become dull to me.
Please tell me your experiences/recipes/how well or not so well it worked for you.
I learned about the paleolithic diet from one of the original researchers, a friend of mine who is an archaeologist at the University of Stockholm. I called her after a visit to the doctor. I was nearly dying and could barely walk from weakness. My blood pressure was through the roof; I had low blood sugar, high cholesterol, and I needed to lose a lot of weight.
I followed the cooked paleolithic diet, not the raw one. After 36 hours on the diet, I felt immediately better. Within a week my cholesterol went from 275 to 194 with a great ratio of the good cholesterol. I’ve been on the diet since March 1, 2007, and I’ve lost 25 pounds, and my blood pressure is near normal.
My only variation on this diet is that I include some dairy (for good bone density).
It’s the best diet I have ever seen, and you don’t have to buy any special foods. Just use the stuff you find in the grocery store. I’ll bet all the diet industry people (see above) are ticked off about this one!
Oh, and according to my friend at U Stockholm, the secret to making it more effective is to incorporate a wide variety of foods. Don’t just eat chicken beef and pork. Eat duck, turkey, lamb – heck I’ve even tried goat. Try fruits and vegetables you’ve never tried before. Eat all kinds of fish and shellfish, not just cod, salmon and shrimp.
One cheap way to get some variety is to take up hunting – even small game (a squirrel is a fine meal) – and don’t forget fishing. After all, it is the HUNTER-gatherer diet.
